Charles H. Shinners

U.S. Veteran

Funeral services for Charles H. “Charlie” Shinners, 87, of Davenport, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 4, 2012 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Davenport. Burial with military honors will follow at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. The Family will greet friends from 3:00 – 5:00 PM on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary in Davenport. Mr. Shinners passed away peacefully with his family at his side following a brief battle with cancer on Thursday, May 31, 2012.

Charles Herbert Shinners was born on January 29, 1925, to John P. Shinners and Ida Mae (Finch) Shinners. He was the second to the youngest child of 7 children. He married Dolores Ann Boettcher on April 8, 1951, in Davenport. He was a lifetime resident of Davenport and most recently resided at Good Samaritan Home.

Charlie, as he was known by family and friends, attended the Davenport Community Schools. He was a proud WWII Navy Veteran and widely recognized by the Navy cap he wore proudly most every day. He was employed by the United States Post Office for 30 years, retiring in 1980. Along with spending time with family, he enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing and keeping in touch with fellow retirees. He was a proud member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church for 50 plus years, lighting the candles on the altar for many years – rarely missing a Sunday.

He could “wow” the crowds with his paddle ball prowess. His sense of humor brought joy to the hearts of many. He will always be lovingly remembered for the candy he kept on hand for family, friends and anyone who had a sweet tooth. His “smiley face” stickers and hand written smiles were legendary to all who received cards and notes from him.

Survivors include his 4 children, Marilyn (Tom) Doerrfeld, Savage MN; Janet (Matt) Gau, Davenport, IA; Kent (Holly) Shinners, Bradenton, FL; Jerry (Theresa) Shinners, Davenport, IA; grandchildren, Blaine (Jodi) Doerrfeld, Shawn Doerrfeld, Dan (Kim) Gau, Jennifer (John) Korch, JoAnna (Jeff) Miller, Joel Shinners, Kara Shinners, Brady Shinners, Nick Shinners, Amber (Bryan Batey) Shinners, Jacob Shinners;9 great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Moughler; sister in-law, Elaine Sanger and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Dolores; an infant son; his parents, John and Ida May (Finch) Shinners; brothers John (Maggie), Edwin (Gen), Richard, William, and Mary Ellen, and brother-in-laws, Clarence Moughler and Raymond Sanger.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church or The Good Samaritan Society, both of Davenport.
